JFStan's Gallery

Welcome to my gallery... This page was initially created to keep from having to e-mail each of my drawings to each of my friends individually, but now I welcome everyone who finds it. I'm dedicating this page to my wife, without whose encouragement and understanding I would be nothing, and to my internet friends whose kind words keep me smiling (hello to Elizabeth, Jaye, Tracy, Sheila, Est, Jules, Dean, Eileen, Leah, Tari, Jessie, Allie and Rachel). [If you found this page while visiting Rachel's website, E-mail me using the link at the bottom of the page and let me know!]

Click on the links below to view each drawing. Below the links you'll find my thoughts and theory on drawing in general. I update this with each new drawing so don't forget to read it each time you visit.

Most all my drawings are done in graphite, using soft lead pencils (2B to 6B). I use a 6H pencil for the initial sketch. I usually use lighter weight paper (50#)

I enjoy doing portraits because of the details in the human face. There's no better way to appreciate someone's beauty than to draw them. It forces you to study all the subtle details and bring meaning to them. You can find beauty in everyone and everything, and drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, poetry or any artistic medium can allow you to see it more clearly.

When I draw, I usually start at the upper left corner of the picture and work my way down to the lower right. There's no mysterious methodical secret as to why I do this, it is simply because I don't want to rest my hand on a completed part of the drawing and risk smudging it.

What I draw depends on several things. I am often inspired by photographs I see, and feel a desire to try to capture the essence of a photo in a drawing. But, even more inspiring are my family and friends, hence they have been and will continue to be the subject of many of my drawings.

I've been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil, so I've been accused of being "talented" from an early age. Talent is a word I hesitate to use, especially in regards to myself, mainly because I don't believe that talent is required to do something well. Plus, it simply wouldn't be right if I didn't give a lot of credit to my art instructors in high school and college, Barabara Allen, Michael Elvestrom and Julia Smith.

I'll be adding more pictures as I finish them, as well as expanding on the comments. Keep checking back.
